Respect Our Beaches – Personal project.

After moving to Broadstairs from London in 2015 I found it maddening to see the state the beaches were left in by visitors each summer. A carpet of litter left every evening for over-stretched council workers and local volunteer groups to clean up in time for the next day. Only for the cycle to repeat. So I set myself the task of creating a campaign urging everyone to take responsibility.

No messing.

I began by creating a set of illustrations and posters for distribution around Broadstairs and to begin shouting the message loud and clear to visitors. I financed an initial print run and distributed to local shops, bars and restaurants, finding no shortage of like-minded people along the way. I also created a set of free downloadable social media assets for anyone wishing to share.

The resulting social media posts then caught the eye of Thanet District Council who contacted me to discuss expanding the campaign and began my working relationship with them.

We created beach banners, pop up graphics for station platforms, large and small littler bin decals. Packs of posters were also sent out to local businesses for display in their shop fronts.

The reception to the campaign was heart-warming, struck a nerve far beyond home and resulted in posters and graphics being sent as far as Cornwall. I still plan to expand on the campaign assets in future.
