Johnston Centenary collection – Transport for London.
Originally commissioned by London Transport in 1914, Edward Johnston’s typeface is still used across London’s Transport network today. As part of the centenary year, I was commissioned to design a poster and gift collection for the Transport Museum Shop.
Celebrating London’s Alphabet.
My poster celebrates the Johnston typeface in it’s ‘natural habitat’. I spent time photographing buses, tube trains, signage and objects all around the city, as well as the Transport Museum and its storage Depot in Acton. The resulting alphabet includes letters and numbers spanning 100 years.
The gift range that followed takes a more minimal, monochrome approach. Presenting the typeface in all it’s unadorned glory, the collection includes boxed bone china mugs, children’s melamine table ware and accessories.

A limited edition watch was also designed for the collection. The monochrome palette retained and small but important detail added, with numerals replaced by the typeface’s signature diamond dot of the ‘i’.
