The CWGC Experience – Commonwealth War Graves Commission
The CWGC Experience is a brand new ‘behind the scenes’ experience, shining a light on the work of an incredible organisation. Visitors are taken on a tour of the Commission’s workshops where they watch master craftsmen at work. Working closely with associate One&More Ltd, we were responsible for the design and creative direction of the visitor experience.

Being authentic.
Anything but a museum, the CWGC Experience offers a close-up view of the on-going work of the CWGC where visitors feel part of a real working environment. We developed a design to reflect that. A contemporary, industrial aesthetic runs through all 2D and 3D elements, taking inspiration from materials, colours and graphics found within the CWGC’s workshops. A bespoke stencil cut of Gill Sans (CWGC’s corporate font) provides a nod to the Commission’s original branding, while creating a unique identity for the visitor centre.

Making an entrance.
With the workshop tour focussing on the day-to-day work, CWGC wanted an entrance piece that captures the story of their vast global commitment. Our solution is a 10 metre global map, produced in printed Iroko timber strips. Each strip displaying the number of graves cared for globally by the CWGC and highlighting the CWGC’s member nations. The map makes a powerful and unforgettable first impression.

Behind the scenes.
Following a short introduction film, visitors are directed to an open air courtyard for an audioguide-led tour of the CWGC’s workshops. We created a multi-purpose centrepiece, continuing the industrial theme. The galvanised steel structure, with Iroko timber seating and Richlite panelling provides a clear pathway for the visitor tour, with graphic interpretation around the perimeter and a central space encouraging demonstration and interaction with staff. Way-finding is provided by unmistakable 2 metre numerals, hand painted directly to the brick work by sign-painter Archie Proudfoot.
