Heathrow: The Journey – University of West London.

The Heathrow Airport Archive was donated to the UWL in 2018. Following a Heritage Lottery Fund grant for the objects' preservation and display, I was commissioned to design an exhibition showcasing the archive and telling the story of the world’s busiest airport.

A sense of arrival

I worked with regular associate designer David Germond to transform a previously unloved space in the main foyer of UWL. Working closely with writer Steven Swaby we developed a bold and crystal clear interpretive system for the space; the elongated interior lending itself perfectly to a timeline.

Taking inspiration from Heathrow’s iconic interiors, signage and signature yellow, we developed a modular, floating structure to display stories, objects, infographics and iconic photography, telling the story of Heathrow’s growth and evolution from grassy field to global travel hub.

The radical transformation of the space included a matt black paint finish throughout, re-flooring with runway grey carpet (complete with bold yellow stripe) and frosting the windows with human sized ‘HEATHROW’ lettering using a bespoke font developed for the exhibition.
