Ellington Park signage & interpretation – Thanet District Council

Ellington Park is one of the very few open, green spaces in Ramsgate. Previously neglected, a recent Heritage Fund grant has provided much needed funds for the restoration of the park and its heritage landmarks. I was commissioned to create signage, way-finding, maps and interpretation.

Pride of place for residents & visitors

The brief was to tell the story of the park (the recent project) and its importance and history. To use accessible and inclusive design to convert casual visitors to engage at a deeper level and give existing residents and visitors a pride of place in their newly restored space.

The solution was to develop a bright and bold graphic language, instantly recognisable to visitors, that ties together the maps, signage and graphic panels. Clean and clear sans serif fonts and rich, contrasting colours are combined with vintage imagery to engage visitors in the park’s rich history.

Engraved York Stone plinths mark the WWII Tunnel Entrances beneath the park and throughout the town. Bright and bold maps welcome visitors to the park at each entrance and heritage landmarks are marked by graphic panels incorporated into reconditioned gas lamp columns. Finally, a printed pocket map is available free to all visitors.

“Andy's approach to the interpretation at Ellington Park was excellent. He constantly managed the connection between the information required with high quality design. He was easy to work with, had an intuitive and accessible approach with a consistent eye on the quality of the work.”
