Year of the Bus – Transport for London
2014 was designated Transport for London’s ‘Year of the Bus’. This poster and gift collection, commissioned by the London Transport Museum shop, celebrates the iconic buses of London and its ever-evolving form through the decades.
Illustrating an icon.
Along with phone boxes and black cabs, London’s red buses are recognised and revered around the world. This poster celebrates the design of London’s buses through the decades, from the primitive Shillibeer Horse Bus through to the ever controversial but now ubiquitous New Routemaster.
I delved deep into the London Transport Museum drawing and image archive for source material for the illustrations and worked closely with their experts and volunteers to ensure every last detail was accurately drawn.
The poster was accompanied by a limited edition gift collection including a ceramic mug set, stationery and textiles. All printed in the signature Routemaster Red. The poster is available in the brilliant London Transport Museum Shop.

An alternative pattern was developed for the textile range, including heavy cotton totes, tea towels and glasses cloths. The diagonal layout, with alternate directions of travel adding a sense of movement to the design and the repeat pattern allowing for flexible but consistent application across a wide range of items.
